TECPHI

TECPHI Program Overview

The Tribal Epidemiology Center Public Health Infrastructure (TECPHI) grant is a CDC cooperative agreement that complements IHS funding to increase TEC public health capacity and infrastructure. The purpose of TECPHI is to reduce programmatic silos within TECs and expand their ability to perform the seven core functions by building data infrastructure, increasing staff capacity and establishing partnerships in Tribal communities.

Racial Misclassification

With many decisions relying on the assumption of accurate data, misclassification of race is a significant problem when describing health disparities and equity. This has been problematic for the American Indian and the Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations as they are often racially misclassified in mortality and other datasets, critical for decision-making. Furthermore, AI/AN data may be altogether omitted from other data reporting. This complicates outreach efforts to a historically marginalized population. Accurate data are crucial to understanding the population burden of disease and injury, identifying disparities among population subgroups, monitoring trends over time, and prioritizing programs and resource allocation.

The SPTHB is dedicated to investigating the various ways racial misclassification may occur and strategies to mitigate and correct racial misclassification.
