Native American History & Peer Support

Presented by CSTLTS Grant of SPTHB in conjunction with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS).

Many Native Americans have found strength and healing in recovery by reconnecting with their culture, traditions, and community. This training is designed to help Peer Recovery Support Specialists (PRSS) deepen their understanding of Native American history, culture, and the unique challenges Native communities face.

Participants will explore the impact of historical trauma, intergenerational grief, and systemic health disparities on substance use and mental health within Native American populations. The training will provide culturally conscious approaches to peer support that honor traditional healing practices and Indigenous worldviews.

Through discussion, reflection, and case examples, PRSS will learn how to support culturally rooted recovery journeys and connect individuals with relevant tribal and community resources. By the end of the training, participants will be better equipped to provide respectful, informed, and empowering peer support to Native American people navigating recovery.

 1. Learn about key events and policies in Native American history and how they impact people today.

2. Explore common connections between Native American cultures, while recognizing that each of the Tribes in Oklahoma are unique.

3. Discuss the impact of substance use disorder and the opioid epidemic in Indian Country.

4. Explore mind maps and talking circles as tools to process emotions and promote mental health.

5. Learn strategies to provide culturally conscious peer support to Native Americans.
