Prescription Monitoring Program Training

Presented by the CSTLTS Grant at SPTHB.

This 45-minute training provides an overview of the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP), including registration, navigation, and effective use in clinical practice. Participants will learn how to use PMP data to identify patients who may be at risk for or experiencing substance use disorders and explore available referral and treatment resources. The course also supports prescribers in evaluating their own prescribing patterns, understanding best practices for safe and responsible prescribing, and implementing strategies to protect their professional practice. Current prescribing trends will be reviewed, along with opportunities for system-wide improvement and harm reduction.

1.      Describe the purpose, registration requirements, and core functions of the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP).

2.      Demonstrate how to access, interpret, and apply PMP data to support clinical decision-making.

3.      Identify prescribing patterns and patient behaviors that may indicate risk for substance use disorder.

4.      Evaluate personal prescribing practices using PMP data and evidence-based prescribing guidelines.

5.      Apply strategies to improve safe prescribing, reduce misuse and diversion, and connect patients to appropriate treatment and support resources.
